Nokia Instant Community Gives Introverts a Voice in the Community

May 27, 2010

If you ever wanted to talk to one of your friends only to find out that nobody was available, well Nokia may just have the solution for you. With their new system called “Nokia Instant Community”, users will be able to connect instantly to other people who are also looking for someone to talk to. By using an ad-hoc Wi-Fi connection, the service gives you the means to start a conversation with the community around.

Start off by customizing your profile and placing only which information you would like to share to the public, then click on the community tab to list the groups and members currently online. Afterwards, choose which room you would like to participate in and you will be chatting with strangers in no time.

Well actually, you will not really be chatting with total strangers. The community tab does not flood your list with people from another country, it simply displays the people who are online at the moment in your vicinity. That means you may get to chat with that cute girl sitting across you at a coffee shop or a school mate in a room nearby.

There are several options on how you can build and enjoy interacting with a community. Aside from the group chat, you can share files like photos and videos by putting them up for download. Nokia protects your privacy by simply listing the file that your chat mate wants to share and giving you the power to download it by heading to a separate page. Instant Community participants will be able to download files by browsing the listed content and asking a confirmation from the file owner.

The Nokia Instant Community is developed by the Finnish mobile phone giant with the Tampere University of Technology. TUT is responsible for the UI while Nokia handled the communication-related technology.
