However, Nokia being Nokia, this little thing (their first ever branching out into this pure computing realm) is an absolute gem. It’s not all that different from the ever growing number of other netbooks on the market, but then that’s always been Nokia’s forte: making things that are not really remarkable, but are downright solid.

Which is exactly the case with the Nokia 3G Booklet. The RAM, the processor, the screen size and type can all be flicked by with a bit of a yawn. But then a couple of things hit you, as you scroll through the likes of this official page. The WiFi AND 3G for example. 3G…. in a netbook! Nice. Then there’s the A-GPS… Then there’s the 12 hour battery life (as long as you don’t go crazy on the bongo viewing, mind)…

And then you get a look of the thing. And… it all starts to make sense. A lot of sense indeed. Because while there’s nothing truly spectacular about the Booklet, there’s more than enough being done at a very high standard, and just enough that’s truly unique, to make this a very, very viable option indeed. that’s what you’d normally expect from us, right? These are the major themes, topics and general sentiments that you’d expect whatever the handset, whatever the announcement, whatever the news. Well, today, with the N900, you can rest happily in your extra support chair you fat ****, because we have just about nothing but nice things to say about this thing.

All we have to say is: look at the video. Just look at it. Fair enough, it’s a typically shoddy, cheap, almost ridiculous effort from our Finnish friends. But: Just. Look. At. How. That. Things Performs.

The Nokia N900 doesn’t look like it’s just handling, or dealing with, or acceptably coping with the tasks being sent its way. It looks like it’s doing them in its sleep. In fact, rather than beating around the bush, we’ll just come right out and say it: this phone looks incredible. Like, special special. Not just, yeah, kinda better than most out there in a couple of ways, but actually really, really, REALLY good. Just look at it!

Wait, that was only 18 months ago. Or at least that’s how we remember it… Anyway, point being, touchscreens have come a long way recently. Something that is made all the more apparent when a Nokia 5230 lands on your desk with a look that says, ooohhh, look at me, wouldn’t you like a caress of my curves, but with a price tag that screeches, A’WIGHT DARLIN, FANCY A QUICKIE RAWND TH’ BACKATHA GARIDGES, YEAH?

Which, ahem, is to say (obviously), that the Nokia 5230 is rather jolly good value for money, providing as it does a wide range of very competent features for a price that one has to see before one quite believes it.

Here’s a question for you. If you’re product is fantastic, really truly brilliant in almost all ways – the way it played music, the connectivity, the incredible new feature that gives you a lifetime license for the turn-by-turn and voice-guided navigation software that you’re really proud of – but, but but but, had one little flaw (such as, say, the screen not being so hot outdoors / in the sun), then when you made a video about that product, would you

A. Make sure that flaw is not seen at all

B. Ensure that if that flaw has to be seen, it’s the briefest, least noticeable scene in the whole film

C. Make the scene that shows of this one little flaw long, tedious and so painfully revealing that anyone who watches the film will come away thinking only of that one flaw.

If you answered C. then congratulations! You too can be employed by Nokia some time very soon. Because as this Nokjia 5800 navigation review amply demonstrates, as does this official page, the Nokia 5800 Navigator edition is a truly brilliant phone. But, just like its not-quite-but-almost identical twin the 5800 XpressMusic, the screen doesn’t fair all that well in direct sunlight. So, you know, it might have been maybe a good idea TO NOT TAKE THE THING OUT IN BRIGHT SCANDINAVIAN SUNLIGHT AND THEN STICK A CAMERA RIGHT UP CLOSE SO ALL YOU CAN SEE IS THE CAMERA’S REFLECTION AND HOW BADLY THE SCREEN IS DEALING WITH THE SUNLIGHT YOU FLAMING IDIOTS.

See, see how simple it is? Now if someone could just explain it to the Finns we’ll be alright in the future, fingers crossed.

0.3 inches shaved off the screen size? Check

Internal storage reduced (though microSD-replacability almost entire)? Check

Some other minor things gone on that are so minor we can’t even be bothered listing them? Check, check, check…

So, it seems like there’s less reasons to be mildly, if even barely, if even at all interested in the new Nokia N97 Mini than there are reasons to join the Young Conservatives. However, we think it’s actually rather marvellous that nothing has really been done to the N97 as it’s made its way into this new mini format. Because, apart from its almost obscenely obese size, there was nothing wrong with the N97 in the first place. Far from it, in fact. It was a cracker of a phone. Just a cracker of a phone with a weight problem. But now it’s a cracker of a phone, still with a full-QWERTY keyboard, that feels absolutely magic in your hand. Not just good, not just ‘oh I guess this feels alright for a big phone’, but actually magic. It just plain fits.

So there we have it. The N97 was a phone that managed to shift millions of units in no time at all even though it was an ugly heifer. The super cool n’ slim Nokia N97 is, well, destined to sell even more millions of units because it’s a very long way from being a cow indeed.

So, another day, another fantastic phones with a crap na- hang on… what’s this? The X6? X6?! Only two symbols. Only one number?! Good heavens, what on earth is going on. We’re terrified. This is… hmm… well… kind of exciting, in a geeky kind of way. Because we’d actually be quite proud of answering, ’so are you going to get a new phone any time soon because you’re current handset smells and seems to attract pigeons and wails like a dog instead of ringing and it looks at me funny and can you just put it away again please I don’t want it near my food,’ with ‘yes, yes we are, we’re going to buy – wait for it – we’re going to be purchasing – stand back now – the Nokia EX-SIX. Yes, you heard us right, the EX-SIX. BOOM!’

Then if anyone was still actually sat with you, you could explain how the Nokia X6 is just about the best music phone on the market, not to mention a cracking smartphone in its own right. As this Nokia X6 review well testifies. Or as you’ll find if you have a gander at these Nokia X6 deals. Then the people who were still sat with you will ask what you mean, because they won’t be able to see or click on the hyperlink if you just say ‘rreview’ or ‘ddeals’. Then they’ll leave. But it will be okay. It will be alright. Because one day soon, you shall own the Nokia X6, and all shall be good.

Feel a bit ill? Need a lie down after all that capitalised intensity? Just the thought of all that popular “music” make you wish the gosh darned wireless had never been invented in the first place, what with all the hip hopping and jiving and the like that’s come out of it? Then the X3, my casually bigoted friend, is not for you. Because the Nokia X3 is all about da moosic, all about da choons.

Cheap? Check.
Great music player? Check.
Obscenely loud stereo speakers that will wind up 99.4% of people on the bus? Check.
Access to the unlimited-tunes Comes With Music Service with certain Nokia X3 deals? Check.

Checkedy check check checkaroony. There simply is not going to be a phone released in the next few months that is going to appeal to the musically conscious yoof more than this little thing. But the good thing is, the thing that makes us not dismiss this phone, in fact, is that the Nokia X3 also comes with a whole heap of other great gadgets n’ gizmos. A-GPS? Fast web browsing? Generous bundle of in-box thingies? Social networking apps? Very cool preloaded games? Checkadeckydoodah.

Adults have affairs, kids have crushes.

And now, adults have Blackberries, and the kids can (soon) have the Nokia 6760 slide. Because, without meaning to be too derogatory, the 6760 is just that: a Blackberry for kids (meaning ‘youth’, down with da kids kind of kids, not actual kids). QWERTY-keyboard: check. Email functionality: check. Internet connectivity: check. But there’s nothing, absolutely not a thing that says ‘business’ when you look at the Nokia 6760 slide. And, luckily for the kids, this thing’s pricing is a long long way from the business end of the spectrum too.

And all of this isn’t to say that you should all be avoiding Nokia 6760 slide deals like these, or 6760 slide deals like these. Far from it. If you are someone who uses their phone more for Facebooking, Twittering, instant messaging and whatever elsing, then it could be absolutely perfect for you. Just don’t expect to be seeing them in the hands of anyone over the age of, say, 20 any time soon.

The Nokia 3720 will of course appeal to all sorts of explorers, construction site workers, and other people who generally make us feel a bit inadequate. But we think there’s also going to be a very decent market for people who are just plain clumsy.
