The Nokia N900 is a very impressive mobile phone. While not many people would agree to it, Nokia considers the N900’s hardware as close to a computer.

At the very least, the device is able to run computer games such as StarCraft thanks to the efforts of developers who have found ways to run computer code on the smart phone. It was only a matter of days after the launch of the Maemo did the very first game emulators on the phone arrive. Now, many N900 owners are enjoying being able to play ROMs for Nintendo and Sega home consoles.

The N900 runs on the new Maemo operating system and it has been decided by the Finnish manufacturer that all succeeding N-series devices be using the Maemo operating system.

While the device is getting plenty of use, some owners of the N900 have reported that the device’s micro USB port is prone to getting misaligned and disconnected. This is a very serious issue. First, the smart phone is reliant on the micro USB for both file transfers and charging purposes. Second, this is matter that Nokia can only fixing by manually repairing the phone. Unlike software problems that can easily be remedied by updates and patches, hardware problems require units to be brought in for repairs.

The problem, as described by those who have it, is a sign that the micro USB slot has not been designed properly for the rigors of daily usage. Should this problem not be a series of isolated causes and instead, be the result of bad manufacturing processes, Nokia will be faced with the problem of having to recall all devices to fix the production error on the N900.

Read more about the Nokia N900 and the problem with the device’s micro USB problem at Engadget.

The Sony Six Axis controller is by far, one of the most impressive and ergonomically efficient game controllers ever made. The device started with the old Playstation controller, which was shortly updated with two analog sticks and force feedback technology. The device was named the “Dual Shock” controller. When the Sony Playstation 2 came out, it came with the Dual Shock 2; it uses the same form of the original Dual Shock, but possessed additional pressure sensitivity in the controls.

While people expected that the PS3 would have the Dual Shock “3”, Sony made a surprising move by announcing that they removed the force feedback technology. Instead, they brought in motion controls and called the device “Six Axis”. Force feedback was given to later versions of the controller.

While the best type of gaming to be found these days is in a next gen console like the PS3, it is still nice to poke around with some of the novelty games that are in mobile phones. The Nokia N900 for one has plenty of game applications and access to large number of ROMs thanks to the various emulators for the system. Since the N900 lacks a controller, playing ROMs meant for consoles takes a little getting used.

It comes as to no surprise that Tomasz Sterna found a way to adapt the PC exploit which allowed people to utilize the PS3 controller through Bluetooth to the Nokia N900. The result is simply astounding. Using the said exploit, the N900 is able to accept player input from the Six Axis, effectively giving users an instant game controller for the mobile phone. With the video output port of the N900 in use, the setup is akin to an instant retro-console rig.

See the video of the N900 and the Six Axis in use at Engadget.

that’s what you’d normally expect from us, right? These are the major themes, topics and general sentiments that you’d expect whatever the handset, whatever the announcement, whatever the news. Well, today, with the N900, you can rest happily in your extra support chair you fat ****, because we have just about nothing but nice things to say about this thing.

All we have to say is: look at the video. Just look at it. Fair enough, it’s a typically shoddy, cheap, almost ridiculous effort from our Finnish friends. But: Just. Look. At. How. That. Things Performs.

The Nokia N900 doesn’t look like it’s just handling, or dealing with, or acceptably coping with the tasks being sent its way. It looks like it’s doing them in its sleep. In fact, rather than beating around the bush, we’ll just come right out and say it: this phone looks incredible. Like, special special. Not just, yeah, kinda better than most out there in a couple of ways, but actually really, really, REALLY good. Just look at it!

Ah, anyway, hopefully you get the point. If you need some more convincing, take a look at this Nokia N900 review, or just scan over these official stats to get a sense of just how darn fantastic its shaping up.

There we go, see: we can do it. An almost entirely positive blog… so enjoy it, you ****s, because it ain’t going to last.
